Learn with me
In theory, learning Original Alignment is simple: all you need to do is follow a few basic guidelines, which remain the same for each of the core poses.
Relax your pelvis with weight in the front, hang your ribs down, relax your chin, keep your weight in your heels.
But just memorizing the guidelines isn’t going to do the trick. It’s applying them that’s difficult, because to do that you need new habits. In fact, coming into Original Alignment is a massive exercise in habit change.
What makes it tricky is that the habits you’re aiming to change are largely unconscious.
Quick: Does your pelvis move forward or back when you wash your hair? Where do you bend from when you pick something up off the floor? When you’re walking, do you pull your front thigh forward, or push off from your back foot?
If you didn’t know the answers without trying the movements, join the club.
To make the shift out of out of Modern Posture into Original Alignment, which is to say, out of tension and fatigue and into relaxation and energy, you need more than an intellectual understanding.
You need a weekly feedback class. That’s a small class, no more than eight students, all on Zoom.
Here are five ways that taking weekly class will hasten your shift into living in balance:
-
In class you will learn how to return flexibility to you muscles and fascia. Tucking your pelvis tightens your lower back. That tightness doesn’t disappear as soon as you learn to sit forward of your sitting bones. In fact, a tight lower back makes keeping your pelvis in balance more difficult. The more you can release, the faster your new alignment will feel easy and familiar.
-
Your ability to feel your body from the inside will grow. Most of the time, we sit in order to do something else. In class, when you sit, you focus on sitting and on feeling and releasing your points of tension. This practice depends on awareness. Being in class builds your awareness muscles.
-
A weekly class will feed your daily practice. Every week you’ll have something to focus on. It could be as quiet as paying attention to your shoulders and head when you eat, or as active as emphasizing the work of your toes in the push-off phase of walking. No matter what it is, your practice cue of the week will keep you engaged, and help your new habits set faster.
-
In class, you will be seen, and helped. Working by yourself can be lonely and uncertain. In class you’ll get supportive feedback on your posture, and most of the time, you’ll be able to make positive changes on the spot. Questions are welcomed with open arms.
-
You will find a friendly group of co-conspirators. To learnOriginal Alignment is to reject the default posture of our culture. Every day greets us with a tsunami of images. The people in those images are almost always in Modern Posture. In real life, those people include our friends and family members. Believe me, they don’t want to hear about how much better you feel now that you don’t sit on your pockets. In class you’ll find a group of people who love talking about Original Alignment and will be delighted to hear about any progress you make.
